Modern football academies are structured around three formal phases. Foundation phase covers under 9 to under 11. Youth development phase covers under 12 to under 16. Professional development phase covers under 17 to under 23. Each phase has its own focus and exit points.

   Best practice is under three hours training per week. The focus is on touches of the ball, basic decision making and enjoyment. Selection is highly fluid.

   Training volume rises to six to eight hours per week. Position specialisation begins. Scholarship offers are made at the end of under 16.
